Sexuality Education Cornerstone Series (Virtual) Fall 2020

October 20, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

The Professional Education team at PPLM is excited to roll out our first-ever virtual Sexuality Education Cornerstone Seminar (SECS) offering this fall! SECS is designed for educators, youth-serving professionals, and individuals interested in sexuality education who are seeking a basic foundation of knowledge in sexuality and sexual health information that they can share with their populations. We have taken this well-known and loved three-day in-person training and converted it into six independent virtual sessions of three hours each held via Zoom. We are committed to retaining the interactive and participatory nature of this learning experience as we move to a virtual platform. Each session will help participants develop the knowledge, skills, and practice needed to deliver information and answer questions related to the session topic, combining discussion and hands-on practical experience.

There will be one session a week for six weeks (except the week of Thanksgiving). You may register for one session, mix and match multiple sessions, or attend all six sessions. A schedule of session titles, descriptions, dates, and times can be found below.

Pricing is tiered — in the Registration Information section you will be asked to select how many sessions you would like to attend, and to check off which sessions you plan to attend. The more sessions you attend, the bigger a discount you receive. At this time payment through this form is via credit card only. If your school or organization would like to pay by purchase order/invoice, please email [email protected].

Session 1: Values & Gender and Sexual Identity
Tuesday, October 20 — 9:30am-12:30pm ET
This session will cover the topics of sexual identity and values as they pertain to sexuality education. The session will begin with exploring personal values, attitudes and beliefs as they relate to human sexuality, and understanding the impact of values in the sex education classroom. Participants will be able to accurately distinguish between fact-based and value-based information, and utilize a range of perspective when discussing values. We will then move into discussing gender and sexual identity including the difference between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. We will explore using inclusive language when discussing gender and sexual identity; and the importance of creating inclusive learning environments.

Session 2: Anatomy & Puberty
Tuesday, October 27 — 9:30am-12:30pm ET
This session will explore the topics of anatomy and puberty, including modeling lesson activities in a gender-neutral and inclusive manner for participants to be able to utilize in their own classrooms. We will begin by identifying all reproductive anatomy and the function of each part, and will then move to discussing the emotional and physical changes that occur during puberty, including discussion on masturbation, menstruation, wet dreams, and hygiene.

Session 3: Sexual Decision Making & Abstinence
Tuesday, November 3 — 9:30am-12:30pm ET
This session will explore how to teach about both abstinence and sexual decision making in the sex education classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on adolescent relationships, explore multiple ways to discuss abstinence, and sexual decision making and sex readiness in a meaningful way with young people. Participants will leave with activities that they can use and adapt to their learning environment.

Session 4: Protection Methods, STIs & Pregnancy Options
Tuesday, November 10 — 9:30am-12:30pm ET
This session will cover protection methods, ways to teach about STIs, and an overview of pregnancy options and abortion services, including relevant laws for minors. We will utilize PPLM’s Protection Methods Kit to explain the most commonly used methods of contraception and include multiple activities and best practices for facilitating lessons on protection methods. Participants will learn how to teach correct and consistent condom use as well as effective STI education in a classroom setting.

Session 5: Communication & Consent
Tuesday, November 17 — 9:30am-12:30pm ET
This session will focus on the importance of teaching about communication and consent in the sex education classroom. We will discuss and model various activities that can be used to engage students in learning effective communication skills, including the importance of assertive communication, as well as deepen their understanding of the need for consent in all facets of relationships and particularly in sexual relationships. We will introduce the use of role-play as a strategy for teaching about communication and consent as well as other topics in sexuality education.

During the training, participants will practice responding to real student questions, receive feedback, and leave with increased confidence in their ability to respond to challenging questions.
